Meet Your Host: Michael Drummond

Michael Drummond is a multidisciplinary artist and fashion designer best known as a finalist on season eight of Project Runway. His client list includes actress Tori Amos, Heidi Klum, New York Fashion Week founder Fern Mallis, and Tika Sumpter, among others. Though largely self-taught, Drummond has built a career that spans fashion design, textile and costume design, and commercial styling for print and film.

Drummond’s work has been exhibited alongside legendary figures such as Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Yoko Ono, Marcel Duchamp, and Iris Van Herpen. As a ready-to-wear designer, he blends conceptual artistry with timeless functionality.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Drummond was one of the first designers to shift to mask production. His early efforts helped raise over $100,000 to produce and distribute masks, while also providing fair wages to unemployed makers during a time of economic instability.

His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions, including the solo show Being Played at the World Chess Hall of Fame (2019), A Queen Within at Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture (2019) and the New Orleans Museum of Art (2018), and The Imagery of Chess at the World Chess Hall of Fame (2017). He has also curated exhibitions such as It’s Not You It’s Me at the Sheldon Art Galleries (2019) and Dressed at the Regional Arts Commission (2013).

In addition to his gallery work, Drummond has designed costumes for operas, dance, and theater productions across the U.S. and Europe, including Medea in Dubai (2017), and Three Penny Opera and Kinetic Field Work at Washington University (2011).

Drummond’s fashion has graced runways from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York to shows in Nashville, Kansas City, Omaha, and St. Louis. His designs and creative contributions have been featured in The New York Times, The New York Post, Huffington Post, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, The Tennessean, Alive Magazine, St. Louis Magazine, Hipster Magazine, and The Vital Voice.
